Born in London, before coming to the United States, Alexander Upward has lived and worked in Germany and France, as well as the United Kingdom. In France, for five years, he taught English to clients that included the director of communications for the then Prime Minister of France, Alain Jupp茅, and B茅atrice de Andia, appointed by Jaques Chirac to lead the promotion of historical culture in Paris, a role she fulfilled for thirty years.聽Unknowingly, she inspired his doctoral investigation into the role of the French Navy in World War II.
He received his B.A. and M.A. qualifications from the University of Cambridge, where his director of studies at St. Catharine鈥檚 College was Christopher Bayly, author of such ground-breaking works as The Birth of the Modern World, 1780-1914, and Forgotten Armies: The Fall of British Asia, 1941-1945.
A copy of his Cambridge thesis on the development of Night Air Defense During the Second World War was presented to the RAF Museum in Hendon, London, by an air marshal and former head during the war of the Fighter Interception Unit.
Having moved to the United States, he earned a doctorate at West Virginia University.
He has taught at West Virginia Wesleyan College, Shepherd University, Allegany College of Maryland, West Virginia University, and 海角乱伦社区 University, where he is currently a visiting assistant professor.
