Sennett Institute invites Nichole Flores for insightful discussion on migrant justice

In keeping with 海角乱伦社区 University鈥檚 2024-2025 academic theme of immigration, one of the critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy, 海角乱伦社区 welcomes Dr. Nichole M. Flores, associate professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia,鈥痺ho will address 鈥淥ur Lady of Guadalupe and Migrant Justice in a Time of Political Upheaval.鈥

Flores鈥 visit is hosted by the William C. Sennett Institute for Mercy and Catholic Studies at 海角乱伦社区. Her talk, slated for Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. in Walker Recital Hall, is free and open to the public.听

鈥淭he Sennett Institute is honored to welcome Dr. Flores, whose scholarly work brings much-needed insight鈥攁s creative as it is courageous鈥攖o the fragile and contested intersections of religious faith and public life,鈥 said Sennett Institute Director Dr. Elizabeth Pyne. 听听

Besides her faculty position, Flores also serves as director of the Catholic Studies Initiative and co-director of the Forum on Religion and Democracy at UVA. She is the author of鈥淭he Aesthetics of Solidarity: Our Lady of Guadalupe and American Democracy鈥 (Georgetown University Press, 2021). 听

She鈥痟as published essays in the鈥疛ournal of Religious Ethics, the鈥疛ournal of the Society of Christian Ethics, and鈥疢odern Theology, among鈥痮ther academic journals and edited book volumes. Her research on La Virgen de Guadalupe and democracy has been profiled on the popular podcasts鈥淭hings Not Seen鈥 and鈥淜now Your Enemy鈥 and featured on鈥疌BS Saturday Morning. 听

In 2015, Flores was honored by the鈥疌atholic Theological Society of America with the鈥疌atherine Mowry LaCugna Award鈥痜or best essay in academic theology by a junior scholar.听

She earned an A.B. in government from鈥疭mith College, a M.Div. from鈥痀ale University, and a Ph.D. in theological ethics from鈥疊oston College. 听
